Background: In our country, there are many patients who undergo renal replacement therapy (RRT) upon reaching stage 5 of chronic kidney disease. Temporary central venous catheters (TCVC) are mostly used to initiate treatment; however, they are associated with early or late complications, or both that increase with the period of use, among which is dysfunction. Objective: Determine the frequency of dysfunction according to the anatomical location of the catheter in patients on hemodialysis in a Hospital in Lima in the period January 1st, 2023 - June 30th, 2024. Materials and methods: This is a descriptive study that included 108 patients of 124 visits with TCVC dysfunction diagnosis at the Arzobispo Loayza National Hospital. Clinical and demographic characteristics, duration of TCVC until dysfunction, number of previous catheters, and anatomical location of the catheter were reviewed. Results: The main anatomical site of dysfunction was the right jugular in 74 (59,68%). The mean age was 60 years, 64 (59,26%) were men and 75 (69,44%) had an adequate BMI. The most common etiology was Diabetes Mellitus (DM) with 43 patients (39,81%). 21 patients (16,94%) had a previous catheter. The duration of time to dysfunction, categorized into week intervals, was mostly 12-15 weeks with 43 (34.68%). Conclusion: The majority of dysfunctional CVCTs were in the right jugular location, as this is the recommended vascular access. Our population was older adults with DM as the main etiology of CKD. All CVCTs had a dwell time greater than the recommended period.
