Background: Schizophrenia is a priority for public health, the primary caregiver faces the satisfaction of basic needs for an extended period of time, which can lead to an intense overload that affects their physical and mental health. Objective: To determine the level of burden of the primary caregiver of patients with schizophrenia who attend the “Wiñay” Community Mental Health Center. Material and methods: It is a cross-sectional descriptive quantitative approach study, the sample consisted of 36 primary caregivers of patients with schizophrenia. The Zarit caregiver burden scale was applied, which consists of 22 questions and has a Crombach alpha of 0.91, evidencing its high confidentiality. Results: The findings indicate that the level of intense burden was present in 66.7% of the primary caregivers. Regarding the level of caregiver overload in the impact of care dimension, 63.8% presented intense overload, in the quality of interpersonal relationship dimension, 52.8% presented absence of overload and in the 1st dimension expectation of self-efficacy, 91.7% presented intense overload. The data were processed through the Microsoft Excel program for their respective analysis with the statistical program STATA version 16.1. Conclusions: The findings show a high percentage of intense overload in the primary caregivers of patients with schizophrenia at the “Wiñay Community Mental Health Center”, with emphasis on the impact of care dimension and self-efficacy expectations.
