An experimental in-vitro study was carried out in order to evaluate the antibacterial effect of Bixa orellana L. leaf ethanol extract compared with azithromycin at 5 µg, on Salmonella typhi ATCC 167 strains, in an in-vitro study. Four dilutions of ethanol extract (100%, 75%, 50% and 25%), azithromycin at 5 µg and a neutral control with DMSO were performed; 10 repetitions were performed for each study group. The ethanol extract of Bixa orellana L. showed zones of inhibition from dilution at 75 % (15.6 mm SD ± 2.1 95% IC 14.1-17.1), at 100% the zone of inhibition was 18.1mmm SD ± 1.5 95% IC 17.0- 19.2, values considered effective in relation to the CLSI pattern (>12 mm) but do not exceed the azithromycin zone of inhibition (28.5 mm SD: ± 1.0 95% IC 27.8 - 29.2). The ANOVA statistical analysis indicated that the study results were highly significant (p = 0.000), and Tukey-test showed that the evaluated groups were homogeneous and the azithromycin group had a greater antibacterial effect. It is observed that the higher the concentration of ethanol extract of Bixa orellana L. leaf, the greater the zone of inhibition. It is concluded that ethanol extract of Bixa orellana L. leaf had antibacterial effect on strains of Salmonella typhi ATCC 167, but less than azithromycin, such that it can be used as a complementary medicine in the treatment of Salmonella typhi.
