This dissertation is a search to encounter the material world from a displaced reality: the photograph. It is a meditation about our relationship with the material world that challenges architecture’s usual approach through abstraction and representation. The dissertation’s answer is to do an exercise of inhabiting photographs, that explores the relationship between memory and matter, where memory allows access to the material world in an extended sense, beyond present inhabitation and without the use of abstraction. Roland Barthes’ book, Camera Lucida. Reflexions on Photography is used throughout as an interlocutor that guides the main parts of the dissertation,. Walter Benjamin’s theories on memory are also key to the work. The text does not produce a theory nor a methodology, but puts forward a mode of doing. In this sense, it is productive. In this sense, it is architectural.
