This paper analyzes the impact that tourism activities have on the economic growth of the Cusco region, in the period between 2000 and 2015. In the Cusco region, tourism has been taken as an engine of regional development, based on: its extensive endowment of archaeological resources, endowment of natural areas of wide climatic and morphological diversity, traditions and cultural richness resulting from the fusion between culture Andean and Western culture. The research leads us to support the contribution of tourism to growth, under the framework of the theories on economic growth, theories of local development and the multiplier theory proposed by Keynes. The analysis is carried out with information on the flows of national and foreign tourists, the significance of investments in tourism activity is explained with respect to the total of both private and public investments, the average expenditure of a tourist is analyzed located in Cusco destination, the contribution of tourism revenues to total exports is measured, among other aspects of tourism that illustrate the importance of activity in the regional economic dynamics. Finally, the work concludes by an econometric demonstration of how investments in tourism with respect to total investments executed in the region have an important influence on regional GDP growth, supporting the analysis in the theory of the macroeconomic multiplier of investment.
