The present research work in rice was carried out in the valley of Jequetepeque, in the province of Pacasmayo, La Libertad. In a direct seeded rice system, five (5) mutant genotypes were studied in interaction with three (3) different seeding rates of 60, 80 and 100 kg of seed per hectare, using as check varieties two commercial varieties, Tinajones and IR43. Both factors were organized in the field through a split plot design with three repetitions. Through the experiment, the mutant lines achieved superior productivity compared to the check varieties. Moreover, the grain quality obtained by the mutant rice was similar to the most widespread varieties in the coastal zone of Peru. Also, at a statistical level, it was concluded that the yields achieved by the three (3) proposed seeding rates did not show significant differences (or interactions). The experiment was conducted during the first semester of 2017, a period that was influenced by the occurrence of the ‘El Niño’ phenomenon. The productivity of mutant genotypes surpassed the obtained by commercial varieties under the same conditions. The mutant genotype LM3AS 339 reached the highest grain yield with 8865 kg.ha-1 , while the commercial varieties Tinajones and IR-43 reached 5933 and 6439 kg.ha-1 , respectively. The mutant LM3AS 160 obtained the highest percentage of head rice with 66% followed by the check varieties. Although the new genotypes did not manage to overcome commercial varieties’ high milling quality, they reached very close values, all of them surpassing 70% of the total grain milled.
