Lucuma is a native fruit from Peru, with high economic potential, was studied on family orchards from La Libertad and Ancash departments, with the following objectives: 1) To analyze the variability of promisory trees 2) To determine production strategies 3) To describe its role in the economy of family orchards. Farmers selected 137 trees from nine orchards, to be characterized using 28 morphological descriptors and 5 primer AFLP combinations. Data for the last two objectives were collected via surveys. All data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tools, univariate and multivariate analysis, and the z test. Phenotipic variability of selected material ranked from low to moderate, showing more variability for some traits from la Libertad. Average PIC of AFLP analysis was 0.27, where E38/M41 (MI = 6.09) and E13/M59 (MI = 5.60) primers were the most polymorphic and useful for variability analysis of lucuma. Some molecular groups were exclusive for each department with a high fixation index (FST= 0.25). Family orchards are dynamic agents for management of lucuma germplasm since they emphasized selection for organoleptic characteristics of fruit. It was found 36 production strategies of lucuma depending on their differences in the genetic material, profitability, association with other crops, destination of the fruits and raising animals, age of the tree, type of propagation, crop management, harvest labour and technical assistance. Lucuma has a relative economic importance, providing up to 10 percent of the total income with a minimum investment. Yaután lucuma market is centralized and traditional, conversely, El Moro market is local and decentralized. Family orchards contribute to the in situ conservation, but genetic erosion is a latent threat. The distribution of lucuma varieties having better commercial characteristics and training farmers to participate in market development could improve the supply of lucuma fruits from family orchards.
