The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is the most important hunting species of Coto de Caza El Angolo (CCEA), Protected Natural Area, is the most widely distributed ungulate in America; and in Peru, is one of the species most quoted for its meat, leather and as a trophy in sport hunting. A fundamental aspect for the management of a species is to have enough information about its habitat, that is, the resources that allow it to survive (food, water, cover and space). In this sense, it is essential to have information on the monitoring of habitat conditions of the species, in order to detect trends and adopt preventive measures. The present research proposes to estimate the availability of food for white tailed deer during the dry season, when the species suffers the most stress because of limited resources. A quantitative estimate is proposed, using indicators that characterize food available, in terms quantity and quality, in each of the vegetation cover units present in the Sauce Grande sector of the CCEA. Based on the results of the estimation, the greater food availability during the dry season in the Sauce Grande Sector is concentrated in the Lower Semidense Hill Forest and the Riparian Forest. Both covers vegetation coinciding with the presence and proximity to the “jaguayes” (springs), another element of vital importance for the habitat of the deer. In addition, based on the results, the limiting condition of the food factor for the deer habitat during the dry season was reaffirmed. There was a substantial decrease in the availability of food in all the vegetation cover of the area, compared to the wet season.
