The importance of studies that seek to analyze and improve potato production systems from the standpoint of sustainability lies, among other social and environmental aspects, to the ability to maintain their productivity and profitability to generate the development of communities and consequently, to improve the quality of life of farmers and society in general. In that sense, the present investigation had as objectives a) characterize the potato producing units in the Districts of Acolla and San Lorenzo, in the Province of Jauja-Junín; b) determine the sustainability of the potato producing units in the Districts of Acolla and San Lorenzo, in the Province of Jauja-Junín and c) evaluate the effect of different doses of calcium on the agronomic performance of the potato crop, Canchan variety, using seed tubers of the farmer (conventional) and certified category. The data for the analysis of the characterization and sustainability of the producing units were obtained through surveys conducted to potato producers in the Districts of Acolla (n = 97) and San Lorenzo (n = 93), which were analyzed by multivariate techniques To evaluate the effect of calcium, which was carried out at the Yanamuclo Regional Development Institute (IRD), the randomized block design was used, in divided plots with four repetitions. At the level of plots the types of seed (conventional and certified category) were distributed and at the level of subplots the doses of calcium (0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 kg ha-1 of Ca). The results of the characterization allowed to identify three groups or similar types of potato producing units that were related to the new synthetic variables: 'resource of social capital', 'resource of financial capital' and 'resource of natural capital', being the ' financial capital resource 'the majority of small and medium producers, who transform the potato in order to give added value and also carry out the storage of food for their food security, characterized as farmers who have a vast rural-Andean experience. According to the general sustainability index (IGS), the potato producing units in the districts of Acolla and San Lorenzo are not considered sustainable. The results of the experimental part show that there was a significant individual effect of calcium doses on the stem number and number of tubers per plant, obtaining the maximum values with the highest dose of calcium used (180 kg ha-1 ). The effect of the interaction of the factors, only, on the weight of first category tubers was also verified. In relation to the type of seed, greater weight of first category tubers was obtained when certified seed was used in relation to the conventional seed, only for the doses of 120 kg ha-1 of calcium. With regard to calcium doses, regardless of the seed type used, higher values of the weight of first category tubers were obtained with 180 kg ha-1 of calcium.
