The objective of this research was to determine the factors that have influenced the adoption of agroecological methods and their consequences in the parish of Toacaso, and to draw lessons on the advantages and disadvantages for the sustainability of agroecological production systems in the Andes., A sample of 44 agroecological producers and 44 conventional producers were selected in the parish Toacaso, and a sample of 44 conventional producers in the parish Mulaló as control. Five categories of adopters were identified: 6.8 percent are innovative risk takers with 22 years of adoption, 13.6 percent early adopters who have between 13 and 20 years of adoption, these two groups of farmers were considered in consolidated stage, it was evident the adoption of good agroecological practices in the management of soil, water, crops, animals and marketing; 25 percent are early majority adopted agroecological practices after 13 years, defined in transition stage; finally, 31.8 percent are late majority, who have taken more than 20 years to adopt this production system, followed by the last adopters who correspond to 22.7 percent. Factors such as age, access to training, membership of a producer organization, area destined for production and road infrastructure, influence the adoption of agroecological practices such as: crop rotation, management of a greater number of plant and animal species, reduction in dependence on chemical inputs and production with added value, with consequences at social, environmental, and economic levels. The consequences of adoption in terms of environmental, economic and general social sustainability were determined using the methodology proposed by Sarandón (2002). From these production systems, 47.73 percent of agroecological farmers have social sustainability with an average index of social sustainability of 2.3; 86.36 percent of agroecological farmers achieved environmental sustainability with an average index of 2.43; 47.72 percent achieved economic sustainability with an average index of 1.93, and 27.27 percent achieved general sustainability with an average index of 2.16.
