The objective of this study was to evaluate three batch sizes during the growth and fattening stage of guinea pigs housed in metal cages compared to those housed in pools. The study was conducted at the Small Animal Farm facilities of the Research and Social Projection Program on Small Animals (PIPSAM) at the National Agrarian University La Molina, from January to March 2018. A total of 144 recently weaned, improved male guinea pigs (type 1) of 14 ± 3 days of age and of the Cieneguilla – UNALM genotype with a general average weight of 255g were utilized for eight weeks. Four treatments were assessed: 16 guinea pigs (T1), 12 guinea pigs (T2), and 8 guinea pigs (T3) housed in cages, while 12 guinea pigs were housed in a pool (T4, control); with three repetitions for each, maintaining a common area of 0.1 m2 per animal. The animals were provided with a mixed diet (balanced feed plus forage) and water ad libitum. There were significant differences (P<0.05) observed in final weight and weight gains among treatments raised in cages, all of which were superior to the control treatment in pools; the weekly and daily gains of the treatments with 8 and 12 animals per batch in a cage were the highest. The results also indicated significant differences (P<0.05) in total, weekly, and daily food consumption; the highest consumption was observed in the treatment with 16 animals per batch, followed by those with 12 and 8 guinea pigs per batch in a cage. There was no difference between the latter and the control, with 12 animals raised in pools (P<0.05); with the best feed conversion observed in the treatment with 8 animals per batch. Regarding carcass evaluation, the treatments exhibited better yields compared to the control (P<0.05), and the cage batch sizes resulted in fewer lesions. Remuneration and economic merit were similar in cages and significantly better compared to the control in the pool.
