The shrimp trawl fishery is well known for the widespread impact it generates on bentodemersal biodiversity. In the north of Talara – Peru, an artisanal trawl fishery, made up of approximately 105 vessels, fishes illegally within 5 miles. Efforts to control this activity are limited and ecological and fishing information is scarce. Therefore, the abundance and composition of the macrofauna associated with the shrimp trawl fishery in northern Talara was evaluated. In 300 hauls on board 21 vessels between April 2019 and March 2020, the catch per unit area (CPUA) of each taxon was obtained and temporal changes in bentodemersal biodiversity were evaluated using generalized additive models and non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination. 243 taxa were identified, of which five species contributed 61% by weight. The main commercial species (coffee shrimp Penaeus californiensis, sand perch Diplectrum conceptione and sole flounder Etropus ectenes) contributed 48% of the total catch and discarded species, composed of 212 taxa, contributed 44%. Diversity indices were high in autumn and winter. The temporal variation of the CPUA of P. californiensis, D. conceptione, E. ectenes and bycatch was significant. D. conceptione and P. californiensis temporally structured the bentodemersal communities. This evaluation could serve as a basis in the search for alternatives for the fishing management of this commercial activity.
