Currently, in the city of Jaén, Cajamarca, located in northern Peru, there is a population of 101,363 inhabitants, where approximately 55,036 tons of municipal solid waste are collected daily, which are stored in uncontrolled landfills, awaiting decomposition. If these wastes are not properly managed, they can have detrimental effects on public health due to environmental pollution and the risks of transmitting infectious diseases, as well as environmental degradation. The objective of this thesis is to carry out a descriptive investigation to gather scattered information. Therefore, a methodology is proposed that allows, step by step, not only to quantify the available energy in municipal solid waste but also to identify the technology that should be applied to implement a thermal power plant to generate electricity from the garbage thrown in urban centers of the city of Jaén. Finally, as a result of this research, the procedure for the implementation of a thermal power plant has been obtained, highlighting key parameters such as available energy, waste flow, calorific value, installed power, efficiency, and cost.
