Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most common complication in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). It is projected that by 2030, there will be around 191 million people with DR. Objective: To identify the clinical findings and clinical- epidemiological characteristics of DR in patients treated by the ophthalmology service of HNAL in 2023. Materials and methods: Descriptive, observational, retrospective case series study. A data collection form was used,, and a descriptive analysis of the observed characteristics was carried out. Results: The data showed 56.29% were women, the median age was 60.84 years, 62.25% had a secondary education degree, and 74.17% came from the coast. Regarding the medical history, 58.94% suffered from arterial hypertension and 11.26% from dyslipidemia. 31.79% had a history of ophthalmic surgery, 61.59% from cataracts and 9.27% from glaucoma. 64.9% had had DM for more than 10 years and 38.41% used insulin. 62.25% had non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR). The most frequent fundus findings in patients with NPDR were retinal hemorrhages (88.35%), hard exudates (48.94%) and cotton-wool spots (39.36%). In PDR, findings were neovascularizations (71.93%), retinal hemorrhages (57.89%) and vitreous hemorrhage (56.14%). Conclusions: The most frequent characteristics of the patients in our study were female sex, secondary education level, coastal origin, history of hypertension, cataract, more than 10 years with DM and the use of insulin. In addition, most of our population had NPDR.
