Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of thoracic trauma in adult patients treated at Hospital II-2 Tarapoto period 2017-2022 Introduction: Worldwide, thoracic trauma is an important condition which represents 10-15% of all traumas, according to its mortality it occupies the third place in countries such as the United States, while in Peru it reaches figures of 2.3% for 2013 and 2.59% for 2021. In Latin America, the main causes are traffic accidents as well as violence committed against other people, with males being more affected with a ratio of 7:1 with respect to females, and the predominant type of thoracic trauma is the open one, according to its mechanism. Objective: To determine the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of thoracic trauma in adult patients treated at Hospital II-2 Tarapoto, period 2017-2022. Materials and methods: a basic, descriptive, simple and retrospective study was conducted with a population of 282 cases and a sample of 79 cases using the validated data collection form for patients between 20 and 60 years old with a diagnosis of thoracic trauma admitted to the surgery service between 2017 and 2022. Results: The average age was 38.68 years, the predominant population group was between 40-49 years old with 27.8% and the mestizo race was the main one with 97.5%, the male sex was the most frequent with 82.28% being this gender the affected for both closed thoracic trauma with 45.57% and open with 36.71%, in addition it was found that the urban area prevailed with 81.01%. As for the clinical aspects, it was found that chest pain was predominant for both closed thoracic trauma with 60.76% as well as for open thoracic trauma with 37.97%. The main thoracic injury was rib fracture with 56.96% followed by hemopneumothorax with 25.32%. The type of closed thoracic trauma had the highest frequency with 62.03% in which the main cause was traffic accidents with 26.58%, while for the type of open thoracic trauma 37.97% were obtained, where the predominant cause was aggression with a knife with 27.85%. Conclusions: Thoracic trauma predominantly affects males in the age range of 40-49 years, mostly of the mestizo race, coming from urban areas, in addition the type of closed thoracic trauma secondary to traffic accidents predominated in the research, this generates thoracic injuries such as rib fracture in those affected which course with intense thoracic pain upon arrival at the hospital.
