The lack of potable water is a problem that not only afflicts the province of San Martin, but is a matter for the whole world. Throughout the world there are people who try to reduce this problem by encouraging the moderate and conscientious use of drinking water, through the use of valves for low consumption sanitary, limiting the time in which a person must bathe, the use of devices reducing flow in faucets and urinals, among others. As well as trying to reduce this problem by encouraging the use of alternative sources of water such as groundwater, rainwater, mist water, reuse of wastewater, among others. The following study is a contribution that promotes an adequate management of the water resource and that will make the ecosystems of our water sources alleviate: The present document focuses on the following aspects: 1) identification of the uses in which rainwater can effectively replace drinking water, 2) determination of water demand in identified uses, 3) determination of supply of potable water with a previous analysis of the rainfall of the area and available catchment areas, 4) analysis of the potential of saving potable water due to the use of rainwater. It is important to emphasize that the results will be perceived in the economy of the university city of the UNSM by saving potable water, as well as in the adjacent population, since there will be a greater availability of this resource for them, which could mean an increase of the hours of the potable water supply. And in the hypothetical case that rainwater was collected in homes throughout the city, the availability of drinking water would be even greater, impacting the entire ecosystem very favorably. On the other hand, it is also the purpose of this study to propose a hydraulic design that optimizes this system of rainwater harvesting in order to save potable water in the largest possible volume, making the implementation of this system economically feasible, i.e. so that the investment made is recovered within a reasonable time.
