This thesis entitled "Influence of virtual social networks on the academic performance of the fifth grade students of the secondary level of the Educational Institution Ofelia Velásquez - Tarapoto, aimed to determine the influence of virtual social networks on the academic performance of students, the study was descriptive, transversal, the sample chosen was 30 students. To measure the variables, a survey was applied consisting of 2 parts: Basic Information of the students; use of information and communication technologies, in which 11 questions were asked, the student's first-quarter grades record was also used to measure academic performance. For the verification of hypotheses, a multiple linear regression was performed with the indicators of the dependent and independent variable to determine the influence of social networks on academic performance. The main achievements of the research was that it was determined that the cell phone is the technology most used by students to connect to social networks, in addition to the fact that a large part of the students spend four hours a day on social networks and that in a larger proportion students they make little use of the internet to carry out their school work; With respect to academic performance, the study revealed that a significant proportion of students have a poor academic performance (<= 10), for this reason it was concluded among other things that social networks negatively influence the academic performance of students. Some recommendations are given to reduce the problem under study.
