The main objective of the following study was to compare the efficacy of both drug and surgical treatment of amoebic liver abscess, through the review of clinical histories, to establish possible factors that help improve the prognosis of the disease at the II -2 Tarapoto Hospital; this is a non-experimental, observational at a descriptive-comparative and analytical level of transversal type study, the sample consisted of 100 clinical records of patients with A.H.A who met the inclusion criteria. An average age of 43.92 years was recorded, where the male sex predominated. 52% of the patients were farmers. The clinical event was mainly characterized by abdominal pain in HCD, fever and hepatomegaly with a mean illness time of 12 days. The average A.H.A size was 89.04 ± 25.41mm in diameter. The hospital stay had an average of 08 days; evidencing that those patients who received surgical treatment had greater days of hospital stay. 88% of amoebic liver abscesses were located in the right lobe, while in the left lobe only 12%. The liver segment (VII) presented greater commitment. The 72% of the patients were treated by the pharmacological method and with the surgical method 28%. The most commonly used drug was metronidazole, and the most frequent combination therapy was the drug with ciprofloxacin. Open drainage was the surgical treatment of choice. In both treatments, there were adverse and / or secondary reactions, which were nausea and vomiting, as well as complications in 8%, which was the right pleural effusion.
