The present study aimed to determine the maternal characteristics of the newborn associated with neonatal sepsis at the II-2 MINSA Tarapoto Hospital, from January to December 2019. A non-experimental quantitative retrospective case control study was developed. The sample population was composed by 197 newborns admitted in hospital with neonatal sepsis and 197 newborns who were hospitalized without neonatal sepsis. The documentary analysis technique and data collection instrument were applied. Results: Mothers of newborns with neonatal sepsis had as sociodemographic characteristics the association with occupation (X2=15,057; p = 0,001; OR = 2,94) and birthplace (X2=30,825; p=0,000; OR = 3,16), there is no association with age, educational level and marital status. The obstetric characteristics that are significantly associated are: Gestational age (X2 = 47,976; p = 0,000; OR = 5,06), prenatal control (X2 = 12,325; p = 0,000; OR = 6,9) and the number of prenatal controls (X2 = 34,357; p = 0,000; OR = 3,08), there is no association with the number of previous pregnancies. Furthermore, maternal complications associated with neonatal sepsis are: Premature rupture of membranes (X2 = 37,057; p = 0,000; OR = 7,68), RPM time (X2 = 41,963; p = 0,000; OR = 15, 56); urinary tract infection (X2 = 19,601; p = 0,000; OR = 4.62), maternal fever in the peripartum (X2 = 16,677; p = 0,000; OR = 35,91), vaginal infections (X2 = 12,377; p = 0,000; OR = 26,62) and chorioamnionitis (X2 = 8,166; p = 0,000; OR = 17,72), respectively, because they had a p < 0,05 and OR > 1. No case of respiratory infection was observed in both study groups. It was concluded that there exist association between both variables, which were measured by using the Odds Ratio, resulting in sociodemographic characteristics (birthplace an occupation) being of a higher probability for a newborn to have neonatal sepsis; in obstetric characteristics: prenatal control, gestational age and number of prenatal controls; in maternal complications: maternal fever in the peripartum, vaginal infections, chorioamnionitis, time of premature rupture of membranes, premature rupture of membranes and urinary tract infection, most of them preventable with adequate prenatal control.
