OBJECTIVES: To know the epidemiological, clinical and treatment characteristics of community-acquired pneumonia in children under 5 years of age. Pediatric Service of the Minsa II-2 Tarapoto Hospital from March 2016 to February 2017. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For which the observational, descriptive and transversal design was used, working with 135 children under 5 years hospitalized in the pediatric service with a diagnosis of pneumonia acquired in the community. For the collection of information, the patient's medical records were used, which meet the inclusion criteria. RESULTS: The predominant sex was masculine in 59.3%, the age group most affected were those under 1 year old (45.2%), with regard to the days of hospitalization, the highest frequency was found in the group of 3 to 5 days (58.3%), the clinical manifestations were cough and polypnea, both with 99.3%, the most characteristic sign being crackles (98.5%), the white blood cell count was elevated in most of the patients, the radiography The thorax showed an alveolar pattern, and the most used antibiotic treatment was ampicillin in 48.9%. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of community-acquired pneumonia was 2% in the period of the investigation, out of a total of 135 patients diagnosed with CAP and a population of 675 children hospitalized in the pediatric service during the study period. Then of every 10 children hospitalized in the pediatric service 2 present CAP.
