The objective of this research work was to determine the relationship between knowledge about umbilical cord care of the newborn and the practice in mothers attended at the Hospital MINSA II - 2 Tarapoto. November 2015 - April 2016. The type of research is quantitative, descriptive Correlational cross section. The sample consisted of 310 mothers, who met the inclusion criteria. The collection instrument of data was the questionnaire. The results were: 58.4% of the population in study have a secondary level of education and 21.6% education higher; 82.3% of mothers reside in the urban area and 57.7% are primiparous 57.7% are between 21 and 30 years of age, followed by minor equal to 20 years (31.6%). 50.3% of mothers have a level of Medium knowledge with a tendency to High by 31.3%. 97.1% have a adequate practice and inadequate 2.9%. Conclusion: There is a statistically significant relationship between knowledge and practices in the multiparous mother (p <0.05), in relation to mothers primiparous (p> 0.05).
