The following thesis has been developed in the Professional School of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the National University of San Martin – Tarapoto, with the purposes of certification as Civil Engineer; on the characterization of soils at the university campus of the National University of San Martin, through computer penetration SPT (Standard penetration Test) supported open pit excavations (pits). Fundamental concepts of soil mechanics was applied based on the theories of Terzaghi and Boussinesq, using equipment and accessories soil mechanics laboratory of our university; It has defined the study area for the location of the scanning points so that they are representative with a total of 12 excavations described as C-01, C-02, C-03, C-04, C-05, C -06, C-07, C-08, C-09, C-10, C-11 and C-12, where samples have been extracted in an altered state and not altered, excavated, log, extracted, collected and transported samples to the laboratory; samples in the laboratory physical and mechanical characterization of soils by standard tests such as moisture content, specific gravity of solids, density of soils, consistency limits (liquid limit, plastic limit), grain size, was performed with these tests and results are classified soil types that lie at the study site; once classified soils has proceeded to carry out tests of STP (Standard Penetration Test). The results obtained are listed at the end by as is evidence from the proper application of theory, research and conclusive results can be presented as an alternative characterization for calculating the safety factor in these types of soils for use these data sincerer way to the results obtained in order to obtain economic but secure foundations. At the end, a graphic created to determine soil characterization through the team SPT, locating in the abscissa No. of Bumps and on the ordinate the calculation of the angle of friction occurs, that uniting these data can locate the point intersecting the soil type, which creates the valuation of this work as it has obtained the objective.
