The research was carried out in the Rioja district, having as main objective "To determine methane (CH4) emissions generated by rice crops in the Rioja district and to propose environmental mitigation measures". A total of 89 users of the El Progreso - Rioja users' commission were interviewed and surveyed through the use of a questionnaire. The methodology developed by the IPCC (1996) was used to obtain methane emissions, multiplying the harvested hectares by the emission factor for the irrigation system, which was determined by multiplying the scale factor by the correction factor for organic fertilizers and by the emission factor for seasonal variations. The results obtained allowed the proposal of mitigation measures. It was found that, according to the total number of interviewees in the city of Rioja, an average of 181.70 ha/year, 2.4 ha/user and a total average of 2,376.96 ha/year were harvested in Rioja over the five years of the study. In addition, the emission factor was 20.0 g/m2 (0.2 t/ha), which determined an annual average of 36.34 tCH4/year, 0.2 tCH4/ha, 0.41 tCH4/user and, finally, a total annual average of 475.28 tCH4 (9,980.84 tCO2eq) as a contribution to the carbon footprint of rice crops in the Rioja district.
