The objective of this research was to determine the relationship between emotional stress and self-care behaviors in elderly patients treated at the II-2 MINSA Tarapoto Hospital. Period July to December 2020. Descriptive-correlational study, with a quantitative approach, with a prospective cross-sectional case report, the sample was 163 patients attended at the Hospital II-2 MINSA Tarapoto, the instrument used for the distress variable was the DDS17 questionnaire in its Spanish version by Polonsky, Fisher, Earles and Dudl (2005) and for the self-care behaviors variable, the definitive self-care questionnaire in T2DM was used. Results: 81.0% (132) are between 60 and 70 years old, 57.7% (94) are male, 54.0% are from urban areas, 69.3% (113) are married, 38.0% have a university education, 50.9% (83) live with their partners and children, 28.2% (46) work in agriculture, 57.1% (93) are actively working, 68.7% (112) have diabetes for 1 to 10 years. Of the patients seen at the II-2 MINSA Tarapoto Hospital, 71.2% (116) showed moderate distress and 28.8% (47) showed mild distress during the period from July to December 2020. The 12.3% corresponding to 20 patients present deficit of self-care behaviors in feeding, 11.7% present deficit of self-care behaviors in exercises, 11.0% present deficit of self-care behaviors in glycemia self-control, 9.2% present deficit of self-care behaviors in foot care, 8.6% present deficit of self-care behaviors in attending consultations for control, 7.4% present deficit of self-care behaviors in pharmacological treatment. The conclusion is that there is a significant relationship between both variables according to the nonparametric chi-square statistical test read with a significance level of p < 0.034, showing that there is a relationship between both variables.
