Cacao is a species native to tropical forests, which is associated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) that help in stress tolerance to both biotic and abiotic factors. Nevertheless, the symbiotic link between AMF and cacao plants is not well established in Peru. The objective of this study is to evaluate the diversity of AMF related to cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) plantations in the regions of San Martin, Amazonas, Cusco and Ayacucho. After collecting, isolating and morphologically identifying the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi from the mentioned areas, the presence of 8 families, 17 genera and 67 species of AMF was observed in the three regions of Peru in the localities of: Shunte, Uchiza, Pólvora, Pongo de Caynarachi, San Roque, Pinto Recodo, San Rejes, Saposoa, Piscuyacu, Chungui, Anco, Santa Rosa, Sivia, Canayre, Pichari, Kimbiri, Lobo, Villa Virgen, Imaza, Shugki, Putuyakat, Nueva Unida, Milagro, Cajaruro, Mandingas, Copallin and La Peca. The genus Acaulospora was the most present, with 24 species, followed by the genus Glomus with 10 species and the other genera in ranges of less than 1 to 5. The geographical distribution showed that 22 localities are similar to each other and 5 localities differ or are different, which may be influenced by the physical-chemical factors of the soil. Values between 54% and 88% of AMF colonization on cacao roots were recorded, with Uchiza being the locality that reached the highest percentage. In the study of diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in different ecosystems of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) it was concluded that the regions of Amazonas, San Martin, Cusco and Ayacucho did not show significant differences in AMF diversity, however, when evaluating the different productive ecosystems of cocoa, the locality of Mandingas in Amazonas presented the highest species richness. The geographic distribution of AMF species in the three regions was not affected by geographic distance, but it was evident that the physical-chemical characteristics significantly influenced the distribution of AMF species. However, when evaluating the different cocoa ecosystems, percentages higher than 50% were found, showing a great capacity for association with cocoa roots, likewise, the town of Uchiza in San Martin registered the highest percentage of colonization
