The present study was conducted in the political-administrative area of the district of El Porvenir, located in the province and department of San Martin; it aims to identify and quantify current land use and land use conflicts, as well as to analyze process, quantify and interpret high-resolution Rapid Eye satellite images from 2011-2012, at a scale of 1/25 000, through supervised classification to identify current land use patterns, representing economic activities. The methodology was visual and digital analysis, with remote sensing and geographic information systems at a scale of 1:25,000, applying supervised classification using Envi and ArcGis software, the Corine Land Cover guide, and with field validation. The results show that El Porvenir is mainly made up of forests, followed by heterogeneous agricultural areas, a minimal part of urbanized areas and water bodies. Land use conflicts are mostly absent; there is only a minimal proportion of land use conflicts, and these correspond to areas suitable for forest production and protection, which are being used for heterogeneous crops. However, a comparison with more updated images shows that by the year 2020 the forest area has decreased, while the heterogeneous agricultural areas and therefore land use conflicts have increased. In conclusion, it can be said that most of the land is being used according to its natural vocation; however, the causes of land use conflicts are the lack of information available to farmers regarding the natural vocation or aptitude of the land, as well as the implementation of certain crops or economic activities due to tradition, or simply due to market prices, which are generally not economically sustainable.
