The research was carried out in the area of influence of the district of Picota, it has an extension of 2144.6791 Km2, and is located in the province of the same name. The main objective of this research was to "Evaluate the lateral erosion of the Huallaga River, in the Picota district, through the use of satellite images for the period 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020". For the development of the methodology proposed in the research, free satellite images Landsat 5 TM, Landsat and 8 OLI were used, the treatment processes and obtention of areas were performed with ArcGIS 10.5 software. As a result it was obtained that in the determination of eroded surfaces the period with more areas of erosions or depositions was between 2010-2015, with 29 zones; in the estimation and quantification of erosions the period with more eroded areas was between 2010-2015, with 1 527 196,645 m2 (152,720 ha); during the 20 years a total of 3 075 965,690 m2 (307,597 ha) of eroded or deposited areas was estimated. In addition, according to the protocol proposed by MINAM 2014, it was determined that the kappa index of the 2020 classification map was 0.80% accurate, indicating that the concordance strength of the classification is considerable, this result served to compare the work obtained in the office with the results found when visiting the study area. This means that all the classifications and processes developed in this research are correct.
