The following work of investigation has as antecedent that in 1873, in the city of London, a fog of sulphurous gases, covered the city and caused 268 deaths. It was not until 1952 that the sinister potential of air pollution became evident, causing 4,000 deaths, again in January 1956, 1,000 more deaths occurred due to an extensive gas fog, the rapid growth of car use, especially since 1940, brought new forms of air pollution, the first air pollution disaster known in the United States occurred in 1948, when a fog charged with sulfur dioxide vapor and suspended particulate matter stagnated for five days over the city of Donora, on the street of Monongahela, in Pennsylvania. About 6,000 of the 14,000 inhabitants became ill and 20 of them died. With the present investigation it has been possible to calculate the number of vehicles that circulate in the main streets of Rioja city, finding that the number of vehicles that circulate per hour in greater quantity, like in streets as: San Martin and Almirante Grau streets Intersection (1,523.67 motorized units), Santo Toribio with Ramón Castilla streets intersection (973.21 motorized units) and Fernando Belaunde Terry with Raymondi streets Intersection (828.68 motorized units), respectively, it has also been possible to measure the levels of CO emission in the city of Rioja, finding that in points N ° 8 (San Martin with Almirante Grau streets intersection), the highest contamination levels are presented in the three shifts.
