The objective of the present study was to determine the type of relationship between participation in play and the development of social skills of 3- and 4-year-old children of the Institución Educativa Inicial N° 451 del caserío Betania, district of Nueva Cajamarca in the year 2014. The type of research was basic, with descriptive level and correlational design, with a sample of 25 boys and girls aged 3 and 4 years old. The instruments used were two checklists, validated by expert criteria. The alternative hypothesis affirmed the existence of a positive relationship between participation in play and the development of social skills in 3- and 4-year-old children of the Institución Educativa Inicial N° 451 del caserío Betania, in 2014. The results indicate that the level of participation in play was high in 84%, both in the vertical and horizontal axes, and regular in 16%. Therefore, the mean score of participation in the game, is high 30.3±5.4 with approximately high degree of variability 33.3%. The level of development of social skills was regular in 76% in the dimensions: primary, advanced, related to feelings and to solve conflicts; high level of development in 20% and low level in 4%. Meanwhile, the mean score of social skills is regular 21.1±6.4 with a high degree of variability 39.3%. Finally, it has been concluded that there is a positive relationship between the participation in the game and the development of social skills in children aged 3 and 4 years old of the Initial Educational Institution N° 451 of the Betania hamlet, district of Nueva Cajamarca in 2014. Being that, between the participation in the game and the development of social skills there is a considerable positive correlation ( ), with a 60.60% of variation in the variable social skills, because it is explained by the intervention of the participation in the game.
