Clinical and epidemiological characteristics and exacerbating factors of asthma in adult patients. Hospital II-2 Tarapoto, 2019-2021 Bronchial asthma is a disease frequently found in adults causing asthmatic crises. The objective is to determine the clinical and epidemiological characteristics and exacerbating factors of asthma in adult patients treated at Hospital II-2 Tarapoto, 2019-2021. It was a basic, analytical, retrospective, cross-sectional, case-control study design. The sample consisted of a total of 219 clinical histories divided into 73 cases and 146 controls. The data sheet was used as a collection instrument, which was divided into three sections: clinical characteristics, epidemiological characteristics and exacerbating factors. The SPS v27 program was used for data processing. The results showed that, within the clinical characteristics, the most frequent time of illness was 1 to 2 years (44.7%), the most frequent symptom was cough (65.8%) followed by dyspnea (63.9%), in third place, wheezing (41.1%) and finally chest tightness (23.3%). The sex distribution was female (69.4%) and male (30.6%), the most frequent age was between 31 and 59 years old (41.1%) followed by those over 60 years old (40.2%), most of them were homemakers (62.1%) followed by farmers (18.3%). The origin was distributed as follows: urban (79.5%) and rural (20.5%). Among the exacerbating factors, the home environmental factor passive smoke exposure (p= 0.012, OR=2.683) exacerbates asthma as opposed to air conditioning and pets with hair which do not. None of the occupational factors such as: exposure to gaseous chemicals, poultry husbandry, dust mites and stress exacerbate asthma. The systemic factor upper respiratory infections (p=0.005, OR=4.992) exacerbates asthma in adult patients, unlike the intake of farm foods, seafood and NSAIDs which do not. Comorbidities such as allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, atopic dermatitis, gastroesophageal reflux and COPD do not exacerbate asthma. In conclusion: the most frequent time of illness was 1 to 2 years, the most frequent symptom was cough, female sex was predominant, with average age between 31 and 59 years, homemaker occupation and urban origin. Passive exposure to smoke and upper respiratory infections are exacerbating factors of asthma in adult patients.
