The objective of this research was to evaluate the efficiency of the artificial wetland using floating sieves with the cattail species (Scirpus californicus) in the purification of municipal wastewater from the Jepelacio Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). In order to achieve the proposed objectives, an artificial wetland of 5.70 m long and 2.00 m wide water mirror was designed and implemented, as well as the construction of floating sieves using the topa tree as material for a planting density of 16 plants/m2. A total of 10 floating screens of 1 m2 for a total planting of 160 plants were installed along the entire length of the wetland. The physicochemical and microbiological parameters were measured every 15 days for a period of 3 months in the influent and effluent of the artificial wetland. The results obtained were significant in terms of pollutant removal, such as 99.93% for Thermotolerant Coliforms, 68.39% for Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), 61.15% for Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and 51.57% for Total Suspended Solids (TSS). The cattail (Scirpus californicus) root system is in charge of the wastewater purification process, showing a high treatment efficiency in the parameter of thermotolerant coliforms.
