This study analyses the impact of political risk on the real exchange rate (RER) in metal exporting countries during the period 1984-2017. The Political Risk Index of the International Country Risk Guide is used as an explanatory variable, broken down into components such as corruption, quality of bureaucracy, law and order, and investment profile. Using a quantitative approach, it is shown that emerging countries present greater RER volatility and greater political risk compared to developed economies. The results confirm a negative relationship between the variation in political risk and the variation in RER, showing that greater political risk tends to depreciate the currency in real terms. This phenomenon is particularly relevant for countries such as Peru, whose economy depends on metal exports. The work contributes to the understanding of how non-economic factors can influence the exchange rate behavior and macroeconomic stability of mining countries.
