The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between the perception of the effectiveness of the punishment system and criminal recidivism in the police region of San Martín Tarapoto, 2023. The methodology was basic, where a correlational design has been considered, applying The questionnaire was directed to a total of 75 justice operators who were experts in criminal law. The results indicated that there was a significant relationship of value 0.409 between the perception of the effectiveness of the punishment system and criminal recidivism. It has been concluded that this relationship is confirmed when reaching a sigma less than 0.050. A system perceived as inefficient can weaken the deterrent effect of penalties, facilitating recidivism. This perception, influenced by personal experience and media coverage, highlights the importance of addressing public interpretation to improve the effectiveness of the penal system.
