Introduction: Scientific evidence supports the use of CBD and other Cannabis-derived compounds in oral hygiene products like mouthwashes, providing natural alternatives to commercial mouthwashes and chlorhexidine. Objective: To compare the antibacterial activity of CBD-based compounded mouthwashes with commercial mouthwashes against Streptococcus mutans ATCC 35668 in vitro. Materials and Methods: Two mouthwashes were prepared using 20% CBD essential oils from different brands. They were compared to commercial mouthwashes in Trujillo using a sensitivity test on Muller-Hinton agar. Sixteen observations were made for each group, and 0.12% chlorhexidine was used as a positive control, with sterile saline solution as the negative control. Results: CBD mouthwash 1 and the negative control showed no sensitivity to Streptococcus mutans ATCC 35668, while CBD mouthwash 2, commercial mouthwash 3, and 0.12% chlorhexidine were highly sensitive. Commercial mouthwashes 1 and 2 had reduced sensitivity. The statistical analysis found no significant differences (p>0.05) between CBD mouthwash 2, commercial mouthwash 3, and 0.12% chlorhexidine. Conclusions: The 20% CBD mouthwash demonstrated high sensitivity to Streptococcus mutans ATCC 35668, yielding results comparable to those of commercial mouthwash 3 and 0.12% chlorhexidine.
