The proper management of waste is crucial to promote sustainable practices and reduce environmental impacts in communities. This research aimed to propose a Domestic Solid Waste Improvement Plan for the District of Zorritos, Tumbes, in 2021. To achieve this, a detailed characterization of waste in the district was conducted, analyzing its generation, density, composition, and moisture content using various methodologies. The results revealed an average generation of 0,51 kg/capita/day of household waste, totaling 0,682 kg/capita/day. The loose density of municipal waste averaged at 192,02 kg/m3. Concerning its composition, it was found that 47,04% was organic waste, 42,11% was inorganic, and 10,84% was non-recoverable. Additionally, samples of domestic organic waste showed an average moisture content of 65,80%. In summary, Zorritos falls within the range of cities in developing countries with middle incomes in terms of solid waste generation. Information about density and composition is crucial for waste management planning, identifying opportunities for recycling and compost production, and understanding how moisture affects degradation processes and leachate production in organic waste. These conclusions laid the groundwork for moving towards more effective and sustainable waste management in Zorritos, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment. Hence, the proposed improvement plan represents a crucial step in addressing current challenges and moving towards a cleaner and more sustainable future in the District of Zorritos.
