ABSTRACT The district of Chillia (Pataz, La Libertad) presents a continuous pre-Hispanic occupation that spans from the Initial Period (c. 1800-1000 BC) to the Late Horizon (c. 1450-1532 AD). The local materiality shows foreign stylistic and iconographic influences, as well as innovative elements. Various common features are observed with the cultural area formed by the northern highlands of Ancash and Huamachuco and with the Chachapoyas tradition. The Chillia’s area, being a transit zone between the north-central highlands and the eastern lowlands, emerges as an articulating space between different high Andean and Amazonian sociopolitical entities. This has favored the appearance of phenomena of negotiation, competition and cultural syncretism. The border character of Chillia as a dynamic and permeable space for interaction is also shown in the current traditions of the district being one of the common threads throughout its history.
