Objective: Determine the relationship between knowledge, attitudes and practices about tooth brushing with levels of bacterial plaque before and after the application of an educational strategy in 12-year-old schoolchildren from the Trujillo district. Materials and methods. A descriptive and correlational study was carried out in a population of 247 schoolchildren of both genders. After informed consent from the parents and assent from the students, a Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) survey on tooth brushing designed by the WHO, translated into Spanish and modified by Gupta et al., was applied, and the values of bacterial plaque using the Green and Vermillon Oral Hygiene Index before and after applying educational strategy on brushing technique. To establish the relationship between the variables, the chi-square test was used with statistical significance if the probability of being wrong is less than 5% (p<0.05). Results: The knowledge about tooth brushing in schoolchildren before applying the educational technique was bad in 62% and 66.7% in males and females; improving after the strategy to a good level in 61% and 55.1%. respectively. Regarding the level of attitudes, it went from mostly bad to average in both genders, while for practices it went from bad to good. When comparing the mean values of the IHOs before and after the application, it improved to the acceptable level in both genders. Conclusions: It is concluded that the application of the educational strategy has improved the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices about tooth brushing, with an improvement in the IHO level, however the relationship between the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices about tooth brushing with the IHO level does not report a significant relationship.
