Student work is common for individuals who are enrolled in higher education, since, for current study programs, it is necessary to have work experience related to the degree studied to graduate from the educational institution. Also, student employment allows individuals to earn additional monetary income and gain experience to be more attractive to potential employers. However, theoretical models indicate that working while studying can be detrimental to expected academic achievement, mainly by having fewer hours available to study, which would result in the interruption of student's studies. The purpose of this study is, in general terms, to identify the variables that affect the interruption of higher education (university and non-university). Also, it is of specific interest to understand and validate the relationship between students' labor market participation and interruption of studies. The results reveal that, in the case of non-university higher education, having more income and being female has a direct effect on the interruption of studies; while the years passed in the degree have an opposite effect. On the university higher education side, having higher income in the occupation, being female and having a secondary occupation increase the probability of interrupting studies; while the years spent in the degree have an opposite effect.
