This paper analyzes the determinants of the duration of formal unemployment for a representative sample of men and women in Peru, using data from the National Household Survey (ENAHO) for the period 2017-2019. Survival analysis techniques were applied, such as the non-parametric Kaplan-Meier method, the semi-parametric Cox model and the Weibull parametric model. The results reveal that women face an average unemployment of 47.57 weeks, significantly higher than that of men, with 45.22 weeks, which implies a difference of 2.35 weeks. In addition, belonging to the tertiary sector, which includes another services activities and service activities, increases the probability of finding employment by 3.17% compared to the primary (agriculture, mining) and secondary (manufacturing, construction) sectors. The Cox analysis shows that factors such as gender, educational level, age and being a beneficiary of the Juntos program significantly affect the duration of unemployment, while family financial support increases the probability of re-employment by 7.99%. The Weibull model confirms an inverse relationship between the duration of unemployment and the probability of finding employment, suggesting that women and people with a higher level of education face greater obstacles to re-entering the labor market. These results highlight the importance of implementing public policies that reduce gender inequalities, optimize job opportunities for young people and promote job creation in dynamic sectors such as the tertiary sector.
