The objective of this research is to determine if the signaling theory is achieving to explain the dynamics of the Peruvian labor market. In particular, it is analyzed if higher education fulfills the function of signaling a greater productive capacity of individuals. Also, the quality of the institutions is considered through the universities licensed by the National Superintendence of Higher Education (SUNEDU). In that sense, the database of the National Household Survey (ENAHO) for the year 2019 and the data on licensed universities published in SUNEDU were used. The two-stage Heckman method, which corrects selection bias, was used to econometrically estimate the income of dependent workers in the formal sector. Also, the endogeneity associated with education is corrected using the education of the head of household as an instrumental variable. Ultimately, the findings indicate that higher education serves as a signal, as completing it has a positive impact on an individual's income. In addition, completing this level of education at a licensed university has the effect a higher salary.
