The present descriptive study aims to determine the level of depression in older adults housed in a nursing home in the city of Iquitos. The Zung Depression Self-Assessment Scale was used, in a sample of 40 older adults with characteristics: 67.5% male, 45.0% in a range of 70 to 79 years of age, 82, 5% have primary education and 70.0% reside in the nursing home for 5 to fewer years. According to sex, it is observed that a higher percentage of older male adults have severe depression (37.0%) and moderate to severe depression (40.7%). While a higher percentage of older female adults present mild to moderate depression (30.7%); and Normal limits (15.4%). According to age, a higher percentage with Intense Depression is observed in adults older than 90 years and over (50.0%) and 70 to 90 years (33.3%); with moderate to severe depression in those aged 70 to 79 (50.0%) and those aged 80 to 89 (36.4%), with mild to moderate depression in those aged 60 to 69 (42.8%) and those from 80 to 89 years old (36.4%). And with normal limits those from 70 to 79 years (11.1%) and those from 80 to 89 years (9.1%). According to the level of education, only those at the primary level present intense depression (36.4%); with Moderate to intense Depression those of primary level (42.4%) and those of higher level (33.3%); with mild to moderate depression those of secondary level (50.0%) and those of higher level (33.3%); and with normal limits those of higher level (33.3%) and those of secondary level (25.0%). According to the years of residence in the nursing home, the highest percentage of older adults with severe Depression are those residing from 16 to more years (50.0%) and those from 6 to 10 years (40.0%); with moderate to intense Depression those who reside from 16 years to more (50.0%) and those from 5 to less years (42.9%); with mild to moderate Depression those who reside from 6 to 10 years (30.0%) and those from 5 to less years (21.4%); and with normal limits those from 5 to less years (10.7%) Overall, 30% of older adults present severe depression, 40% moderate to severe depression, 22.5% mild to moderate depression, and 7.5% normal limits. Considering the levels of depression from the mild level to the intense level, 92.5% of older adults with Depression are observed.
