For the World Health Organization (WHO), maternal death is a problem of health and social injustice, reflecting inequities in access to health services and highlighting the differences between rich and poor. Maternal mortality is unacceptably high, every day about 830 women die somewhere in the world due to complications of pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium, the same can happen to the future newborn or both. Objective To determine and describe the risk factors associated with maternal mortality in the Hospital Iquitos César Garayar García 2020. Methodology Descriptive and retrospective study. The population consisted of all deaths that occurred at the Hospital Iquitos César Garayar García from January to September 2020. Results Of the total of 8 maternal deaths evaluated, 63% were in the age group 20 to 35 years, 50% of primary level and 50% secondary level, 88% were cohabitants, 50% from rural areas and 88% were housewives. Obstetric factors: 75% were multiparous, 75% were 37 to 40 weeks of gestational age and 63% of the patients were controlled. The most frequent direct cause of death was gestational hypertension in 25% and the most frequent indirect cause was respiratory failure in 63%, according to place of occurrence of death 100%, 100% died in the puerperium stage and according to occurrence of delivery 88% was in a health facility. Conclusions Maternal deaths were due to indirect causes, in health facilities, in the puerperium stage, controlled.
