The present study was aimed at solving the following research question: What is the value of procalcitonin as a test for early diagnosis of sepsis in patients hospitalized at Hospital III Iquitos Essalud 2021? The objective of the study was to know if procalcitonin could be used to diagnose sepsis in patients hospitalized at Hospital III of Iquitos Essalud in 2021. Materials and methods: This study has a non-experimental, descriptive, quantitative and retrospective design. For our research, procalcitonin was prescribed to a sample of hospitalized patients. The data were examined using the SPSS V.25 statistical program. Results: In the present study, 561 patients from Hospital III of Iquitos, Ecuador, requested procalcitonin. The results of procalcitonin > 2.0 ng/ml showed 179 cases (53.43%); sepsis was the most common diagnosis, with 197 cases (35.12%); 389 cases (69.34%) were men; The most frequent age range was 51 to 60 years, with 179 cases (31.91%); and the most frequent place of origin was the urban area, with 248 cases (44.21%). Conclusions: The procalcitonin test is a useful tool in the evaluation of patients with suspected infection, but it is crucial to remember that PCT findings should be interpreted in the context of the entire clinical environment and should not be used in isolation. a standard by which to judge treatment options.
