Rainfall represents a relevant event that can have a negative impact on those cities that do not take the corresponding measures. In the area of Mariano Melgar, belonging to Arequipa, there is evidence of damage caused by waterlogging, flooding, among other problems during times of heavy rains. The latter causes damage to the neighboring population, which is represented by the affected population. The progress of engineering together with sustainability has led to the creation of proposals to mitigate part of the excess water caused by rainfall in order to avoid the problems mentioned above. This sustainable proposal is entitled “Rain gardens based on green infrastructure” which, unlike a conventional garden system, has properties that allow water infiltration, making it an ecological drainage system. On the one hand, this infrastructure allows us to reduce the flow of water circulating in the area through drainage properties leading to groundwater. On the other hand, this system also allows us to reduce the volume of water on the surface through a process of infiltration. By means of the described, it can be concluded that this green infrastructure represents a strategy to mitigate storm water flooding in the area of Mariano Melgar, due to the fact that by performing the corresponding modeling in the EPA SWMM software, flow reductions of approximately 25% were observed, while water volumes are reduced by an average of 22%. Therefore, the implementation of the aforementioned proposal is recommended
