The objective of this research is to evaluate the pedagogical treatment of content, as well as the physical and format characteristics related to reading comprehension in communication school texts in the third grade of high school education of private schools, in line with the development of the competence “reads various types of written texts in the mother tongue. A descriptive study was carried out with a sample of two textbooks from the Corefo and Norma publishing houses. The instruments used are the evaluation form for school texts from the National Observatory of School Texts (OBNATE) and a guide of semi-structured questions adapted from the analytical procedure model of researcher Adolfo Zárate Pérez (2010). The reasons for the use of these instruments are the following: regarding the OBNATE Guide, it is an official state document that contains the three communicative competences from which the competency has been chosen "read various types of written texts", and as for Zárate's guide, since it links it with reading comprehension. The results obtained showed that the pedagogical criteria and quality indicators required for the selection of school texts are met with a minimum acceptable score (level 1) in accordance with the required competence.
