The aim of this research was to understand the relationship between body image and tattoos in tattoo artists, with the intention of conceiving a theory that encompasses how tattoos influence thoughts, feelings, and general body-related behavior. In order to accomplish this task, a qualitative, constructive-interpretative focus was utilized, with Conversational Dynamics serving as a research tool. (González, 2008). Results suggest that tattoos are used by participants as a means to own their bodies, thus feeling more comfortable and free. Furthermore, tattoos are socially employed in one of two ways: either to bring people closer or to drive them away by making use of the stigma related to the aforementioned art. Finally, it is argued that tattoos allow for people to document their life experiences (like scars do) through the inscription of significant bonds into their bodies.
