This research is the outcome of applying the Project Based Learning method (PBL) as a learning strategy for students enrolled in the Chemistry and Physics course at the Geology, Mining and Metallurgy Faculty in the National University of Engineering (UNI). In this line, we posed the following question: How to improve the learning process in the Chemistry and Physics course for Metallurgy students so that it contributes enhance their professional education? This document assessed the effectiveness of applying the PBL methodology in this particular case, as well as promoting a more reflexive approach, by the faculty members in the pedagogical practice. The nature of this investigation is qualitative and its application followed the research-action approach. The main characteristics suggested were tested: cyclical, participative, qualitative and reflexive. In this regard, we employed: interview, field diary of the researcher and student self-assessment rubric. The basic necessary conditions for implementing this proposal were determined under a framework based on reflexive action, decision making and innovations in the teaching practice. The 10 students who participated in this experiment stated that the application of this methodology has allowed optimize their learning and provided them with important tools for their future professional life as metallurgists.
