The aim of the study is to analyse the development of communicative competence in the fifth year of high school in rural schools through the application of the didactic strategy of role play. The importance is that teachers learn about the types and stages of this strategy and incorporate them into their classes in English in order to promote communicative competence in students. The methodology used was qualitative and exploratory with a phenomenological method. The techniques that were applied were observation, photography and interview. The sample was twelve students from the fifth year “A” of high school and two teachers of English from a rural school in Piura. The results indicated that three students maintained a clear pronunciation and intonation in language skills and nine of them sometimes had grammatical mistakes. In addition, eleven students always used simple sentences and only one of them did not develop empathy in sociolinguistic competences. Moreover, eight students mostly wrote their dialogues consistently and three of them sometimes used expressions in English. Nonetheless, only one of them wrote the script without considering grammatical and spelling resources.
