Abstract: This study is aimed to investigate the applicability, suitability and feasibility for the use of solar energy as alternative source of electricity for low power systems such as fluorescent lighting and telecommunications, using solar photovoltaic system in public institutions. The mentioned arises from the growing energy demand in the UNALM’s campus and the need to find alternative sources of energy. Also, this study was based on the legal and technical regulations on Peru, which promotes the use of solar power as energy source. Consequently, it has made an energy analysis of environmental engineering laboratory on July 2014 and it determined a monthly consumption of 8030 kWh. Then, a design of a solar photovoltaic system was performed considering the 5 % of the diary consumption (19.8 kWh/day) and based on the methodology of the worst month it was obtained that could supply thus energy with 76 solar panels. For achievement of this nature, the life cycle cost of the project would be S/. 109 000 (PEN). In addition, an analysis of conditions for implementation and lifecycle which considers the regulations applicable to solar photovoltaic energy, infrastructure and waste management was held. This analysis shows that a possible installation of photovoltaic system, no objection would be generated at the infrastructure, in the electricity system, safety or environmental
