The objective of the research was to characterize the total content of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mo, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and trace elements (As and Se) of interest, their bioavailability and solubility during composting of cow manure and tree litter in piles inoculated with beneficial microorganism (IBM), or not inoculated (NBM), on the university campus of the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina (UNALM). The investigation evaluated composting process in six piles whereby three piles were inoculated with beneficial microorganisms and three were not inoculated and this during 120 days. A composite sample was taken from each pile every 30 days. The raw materials used were cattle manure and tree litter. The variables analyzed were total concentration, extracted with DTPA (bioavailability) and extracted with deionized water (solubility) of heavy metals, and trace elements of interest. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed between time 0 and 120 in both types of (inoculated and non-inoculated) piles for some heavy metals and trace element. The total concentration of Hg, Se and Zn increased. However, Mo decreased its total concentration between the same times. The bioavailability in Mo and Cu increased while Cr, Ni and Se decreased their bioavailability between these times. The solubility of Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn decreased between the mentioned times. There was a positive Pearson correlation (p < 0,05) between the increase of the total concentration of Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn and humic acid (HA). There was a negative Pearson correlation between the reduction of the bioavailability of Hg, Ni, and Se, and HA, and a positive Pearson correlation between the increase of Mo bioavailability and HA. There was a negative Pearson correlation between the reduction of the solubility of Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn, and HA. The reduction of the concentration in some extracted metals and trace elements of interest, in the product at the end of the process, may be due to the complexing potential of HA, especially in those elements that showed high correlation and therefore lower bioavailability (Ni y Se) and solubility (Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn). The piles inoculated showed less bioavailability of Cu and Zn and in the total concentration of Cu at the end of the process than not inoculated ones.
